Pigeon pea is usually sown during the months of June and July and currently, the crop is standing in the fields across many states. Pigeon pea holds a special place among legume crops. Globally, India ranks first in pigeon pea production, contributing 79.65% to the total cultivation area and 67.28% to total production. Arhar dal contains approximately 20-21% protein and is the only crop that fixes nitrogen in the soil, thereby improving soil fertility.
Being a cash crop, pigeon pea is widely used as food and in the preparation of other food products. Packed with nutrients such as protein, minerals, carbohydrates, iron and calcium, it is often referred to as the “king of pulses.” This crop is especially preferred in arid regions due to its ability to adapt to high temperatures and survive with deep-root systems. Its drought-resistant properties make it a profitable choice for unirrigated lands, and it can also be grown as an intercrop alongside other crops.
The leading pigeon pea-producing states in India are Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.
