Garlic is a nutritious tuberous spice crop used as a seasoning in every Indian kitchen. Compared to other tuber vegetables, garlic is rich in nutritional properties, which is why it is known for its various health benefits. Besides its use as a spice, garlic has several medicinal qualities, making it not only a cash crop for farmers but also an important contributor to the country’s economy. In India, garlic cultivation occurs in all states, but Madhya Pradesh is the leading state in terms of garlic production.
According to data from the National Horticulture Board, Madhya Pradesh alone accounts for 62.85 percent of the total garlic produced in the country. Together with Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, these three states contribute nearly 85 percent of India's total garlic production.
October is considered the ideal month for garlic cultivation, as the weather starts to change and a slight chill is felt. Planting garlic during the cooler months results in better crop growth.
